Dominic was born in Caleruega, halfway between Osma and Aranda de Duero in Old Castile, Spain, and named after Dominic of Silos. The earliest narrative source, by Jordan of Saxony, does not name his parents, though a later 13th-century source gives their names as Juana and Felix. A story tells that before his birth his barren mother made a pilgrimage to the Abbey at Silos and dreamt that a dog leapt from her womb carrying a flaming torch, a tale likely linked to the Latin play on words 'Domini canis' (Dog of the Lord). Dominic was brought up by his parents and a maternal uncle who was an archpriest. At fourteen he was sent to the Premonstratensian monastery of Santa María de La Vid and later transferred to the schools of Palencia, where he studied six years in the arts and four in theology. At age 24 he was ordained a priest and joined the canonry of the Cathedral of Osma, later becoming subprior under Bishop Don Martin de Bazan.
